Nowadays, the new trend, when it comes to pets, is to have an exotic animal at home. Although it is true that these animals require certain measures and special attention, whoever makes this decision is willing to assume it in exchange for the satisfaction of being part of those who make a difference.

Among the most popular exotic animals in recent years are snakes, spiders, Vietnamese pigs, ants, jellyfish and monkeys.

In relation to the latter, the truth is that this selection is limited to certain types of species, since not all monkeys can become domesticated. In fact, many of them show violent behavior and can cause a lot of damage.

In view of this, those who wish to have a monkey as a pet, for their own good and that of family members who live under the same roof, it is important to find out what species of monkeys you can have as a pet.

Of course, as I have already mentioned, a monkey is not the typical animal that would be kept as a pet, it is not considered a domestic animal. Therefore, it falls under the category of exotic animals and in view of that, you have to learn how to treat and care for it.

If you want to have a monkey in your house, but you don’t have the slightest idea how to do it, you don’t have to worry. Today, through this post, I will be telling you what you need to know about caring for monkeys.

In this way, you will be able to enjoy their company and the “monkeys” they perform daily. In addition, it will be the center of attention and one of the topics of conversation when your friends and family visit your home.

Instructions for caring for a monkey

Before deciding to have a monkey as a pet, the first thing you have to investigate is whether its sale is allowed, since many of these species are in danger of extinction. In addition, you must have all the documentation and legal permits in order.

Keep in mind that unlike dogs or cats, monkeys need attention all day, every day. Otherwise, they might get depressed, bored, and aggressive. They get to live between 20 and 40, which mean that you must commit to satisfying all their needs during that time.

You will not be able to hire a person to take care of it during your absence, since the monkeys tend to become attached to only one person. This could represent a challenge when it comes to wanting to establish a close relationship with another person, since there is a possibility that they will react aggressively.

Also, monkeys don’t like children, which means it might become a problem when you decide to start your own family. But, if you are still willing to take care of it, among the things you should do are the following:

  1. Give him a space. You can build or buy a monkey cage. This should be big enough for him to run around, explore and play. Especially if you are going to spend more than two hours inside it.
  2. Since monkeys like to climb, place branches, hanging ropes and other elements inside it that allow them to do so.
  3. Keep your space clean. Monkeys generally defecate anytime, anywhere. Therefore, you must make sure to clean up after yourself at least once a day, in order to keep your cage and your home in the best possible sanitary conditions.
  4. Make sure it always has water. It must be clean and fresh. Some monkeys prefer to drink it in a dish, while others in a bottle. However, the most important thing is that you never miss it.
  5. Feed it properly. You must offer a varied and balanced diet. You cannot miss the special biscuits for monkeys, which contain an adequate combination of vitamins and minerals.
  6. Also, you should give him grasshoppers, edible worms, cooked chicken without spices, eggs, yogurt, grains and nuts.
  7. Locate a veterinary doctor specialized in the care of exotic animals. Take him to consult periodically and take note of all the instructions he gives you, in order to have a healthy monkey at home.

In addition to these instructions, what other things do you need to know when it comes to caring for monkeys?

What do you need to take care of a monkey?

Having a monkey as a pet requires investing a lot of time, money, patience and commitment. With this I do not want to discourage you, rather, you need to know what is expected of you, after taking the step of buying one.

On the other hand, some of their owners allow them to spend some time outside their cage. If you decide to do it, keep in mind that he will mess with everything he can. Therefore, you need to take enough time to adapt your house. This implies not leaving objects in sight that could hurt them.

Also, make sure all appliances are out of reach. Keep in mind that they will rip your curtains, chew on things, knock over lamps, etc. For this reason, you may need to adapt a room for him, so that they can play freely and restrict access to the rest of the house.

Monkeys are very intelligent animals. Therefore, if you plan to leave it free in the room, it needs to have the same security as the cage. That is, you must place locks and bars on the doors and windows, because they can open them and end up escaping.

In order to be happy, monkeys need a lot of stimulation. Therefore, it simulates wildlife in its cage or house. Provide him with different toys and objects so that he can play and break. For example, stuffed animals, balls, etc. However, change them from time to time, as they end up getting bored with them over time.

Since monkeys are very social animals, you should play with him every day so he doesn’t feel abandoned or sad. The more time you spend with him, the more affection and trust he will have towards you. But what else should you know?

Tips for caring for a monkey

Monkeys are wild animals, which mean that sometimes they will not behave as you expect. Also, it may bite from time to time. When that happens, resist the urge to want to yell at him or hit him. This will only make him fear you and damage his relationship with you.

Instead, make sure he has everything he needs, including stimulation, fun, and enough exercise. However, do not let other people play with them. Monkeys are unpredictable animals and if an accident happens, they can end up taking it from you right away.

Don’t have a monkey that you can’t easily carry. If it’s too big for you, it could end up damaging your spine or causing other similar problems.

Do not expose the monkey to situations that stress him out and make him want to bite. If you have a visitor at home, do not take him out of his cage. Similarly, if someone wants to see it, tell them not to get too close.

Monkeys are like two-year-old’s, except they never grow up. Therefore, it has been proven that they are not animals for all kinds of people. If you have a very demanding job, if you are very busy all the time or if you have children at home, it is best to refrain from buying a monkey to keep as a pet.

Monkeys are very funny animals when they are still small. However, they will change their temperament as they enter adulthood. However, when they become attached to their master, they do so for life.

Since you now know what it means to have a pet monkey, you can sit down and analyze your circumstances to determine if you have the conditions to give it a full and happy life.
