The Pit Bull Terrier or Pit-bull is a dog with a very imposing appearance and bearing and that on many occasions can even be intimidating. In fact, many people have the concept that it is an aggressive dog and willing to attack, when in reality this depends on the education of the animal more than on the breed itself.

In some countries it is a dog that is prohibited because it is considered dangerous, although they can become very good pets and also guardians. They can also be used to carry out hunting tasks and detect narcotic substances.

History and origin of the Pit Bull Terrier

The Pit Bull Terrier is a dog that comes from the United States, although it is an animal that arose as a result of the crossing of English and Irish dogs and that were kept exclusively for fights, since they were provided with more care if it was the champion. It shares origins with the American Staffordshire terrier, with which it is often confused.

Originally, this type of dog was used for sports such as the well-known «Bull Baiting», in which «Bull» dogs faced a large bull. These types of activities were prohibited by the government, which gave rise to clandestine dog fights.

In search of obtaining the best possible dog to be able to carry out these fights, Bull dogs and Terrier dogs began to be mixed. When migrating to the United States, some migrants brought with them the different species of the same dog, crossing them with each other along with other breeds of the country, thus generating the shape and character with which the Pit Bull Terrier is known today.

The Pit Bull Terrier kept its same function on its arrival in America, which is present in its genes, but at the same time it was adopting new habits and the uses that were given to it in this country, where it remained as a fighting dog.

Great potential in their jaws

There really are gaps regarding the deep knowledge of its origin and what really happened, although it can be known that although it is considered a dog from the United States, it comes from two European countries such as England and Ireland. These were raised as farm animals and in the other as a fighting dog.

However, it is known that upon its arrival on American lands, breeders saw this breed as a good option for fighting due to the great potential of its prominent jaws, which caused it to be crossed with American females to produce a total change, between those found the size of the dog.

The use of the Pit Bull Terrier

Pit Bull Terriers were bred as warrior dogs and to carry out fights with other animals, which did not have to be other dogs, but were used against other animals. Upon arriving in America, he had to adapt to new functions, such as being a working dog.

The immigrants settled on farms where they grew food and kept sheep, pigs and cattle, which the Pit Bull Terrier cared for. For this reason they have the characteristics of a guard and protector dog, as well as a shepherd. For this reason they are a dog that can be very faithful, obedient and good accompaniment.

In the houses of the time, it gained importance as a watchdog, becoming chosen to take care of the little ones in the house. At the same time, other people continued to use them for strong dog fights and thus profit from it, which is where they received the bad reputation that still haunts them today.

Currently, the Pit Bull Terrier continues to have a bad reputation that accompanies him and that he has a very imposing appearance, with great strength that makes him hold more than triple his weight. However, it can be very sociable and not create any problems, since it all depends on the education it receives.

Characteristics of Pit Bull Terrier dogs

Physical characteristics

Pit Bull Terrier dogs are characterized by having an athletic and robust body, with a square structure. Its fur is short and smooth, with a rough texture and is attached to the body. The head is large and broad, while the body has a strong, firm back and a deep, broad chest.

They can be found in different colors, having small, round eyes and high-set ears that fold back on themselves. The hair is shiny soft and short.

They are considered medium-sized dogs, with males being able to measure 53 centimeters and females 50 centimeters. The weight, on the other hand, is between 15 and 27 kg in the case of males and between 13 and 22 kg in the case of females.

Pit Bull Terrier Character

Although it has a reputation as a dangerous dog and in many countries it is considered potentially dangerous, its character depends on the breeder. The Pit Bull Terrier has, by nature, excellent qualities as a companion for the family and the home.

Being trained in the appropriate way, it is a breed of dog that is characterized by being good, faithful, affectionate and very loyal. He is also a brave and energetic dog that can maintain a very good relationship with children and is very protective of his family.

When they are in the presence of other dogs, they may bring out their protective and territorial instinct, so it is recommended that from puppies they be taught to socialize with other dogs as well as with people different from their environment.

Under normal conditions they are strong, bold and very brave dogs, with a balanced character.

Pit Bull Terrier Care

Food and diet of the Pit Bull Terrier

The Pit Bull Terrier is a dog that requires a balanced diet, which must be rich in protein and in the right proportions. In this way they can stay in perfect health and maintain their strength.

At the level of activity, it is a dog that requires a high level of physical activity, so you should take it out for walks frequently. In these walks you should look for him to burn as much energy as possible.

In the event that you bet on this breed to have in your home, you must make sure that it has a large space so that it can be distracted, in addition to providing toys that help it to be distracted and stay entertained.
