Due to the size of these types of pets, it is very easy to carry them from one place to another, either in the arms or in a pet bag, with a straight coat that, depending on each dog, differs, since some some are longer and some are shorter.

Taking into account that the hair is one of its most distinctive and characteristic features, it is important to bear in mind that it must be brushed frequently so that it is in perfect condition and the appearance of knots is avoided.

Interesting facts about the Yorkshire terrier

There are a series of points that are basic and that define what a Yorkshire terrier is, one of the most popular dogs today due to its characteristics. Some points that you should know about this breed of dog are the following:

  • They have a docile character, although they can respond in an altered way when disturbed.
  • It is a faithful companion and can be taken anywhere for company.
  • It is a fairly small breed, being considered a Mini Toy with a weight between 2 and 4 kilograms.
  • They tend to have their ears down and elongated, being a dog with a fragile appearance and is usually thin.
  • The predominant color of its fur is brown combined with black spots.

Origins of the Yorkshire terrier

The Yorkshire terrier is a dog that has its origins in Yorkshire (England), from where it gets its name, in the Victorian era. This breed descends from other different terriers such as the Manchester black and brown, the Maltese bichon and the Dandies Dumont terrier, as well as from some breeds that are already extinct such as the Clydesdale terrier.

As for the rest of the information about the history of this breed, it is unknown or contradictory, since there are those who claim that this type of dog was bred in the north of England by people who could not have large dogs and wanted an energetic dog not being able to have big dogs. Others say that they were created to hunt the rats that infested the mining galleries, as well as to make them enter the dens of foxes and badgers.

It must be borne in mind that the original Yorkshire terriers were larger than the current ones, although, through selective breeding, the dogs were reduced in size until they became the dogs they are now, that is, fashionable dogs..

In the United States, the breed first appeared in shows in the 19th century. Currently it is mainly used as a companion.

Characteristics of the Yorkshire terrier

Yorkshire terrier personality

The Yorkshire terrier is a small dog that tends to bark a lot, so it is important that it be trained from puppyhood so that it does not bark so much and that it can also socialize with other animals and people, so that it does not fight or growl when is threatened by others and thus gives free rein to the bad character that he may have in this type of situation.

However, even if you take the above into account, you should know that it is a complacent and sweet dog. He is always willing to be petted and is very affectionate with his owners and children in general, which makes him a great pet for the home.

Keep in mind that although they like to be affectionate with people, it is a breed of dog that tends to behave territorially with other dogs, sometimes even becoming quite aggressive, although it all depends on each particular dog.

Despite their small size, they tend to be overprotective of their owners. They are also aware of everything that surrounds them and that they consider their own, always being aware of everything that happens at home.

Family breed and very popular

These dogs are used to always lying at the feet of their owners or in other areas where they are well protected from the cold, which they cannot stand. For this reason they tend to get very close to their owners, who can keep them warm.

It is a very spoiled breed that expects to receive caresses from its owner at all times. This helps you completely relax at these times, even to the point of falling asleep. They are also dogs that accumulate a lot of energy. That is why it is important that they walk and go for a run in order to burn that energy so that later they can rest.

It is a breed that, due to all its characteristics, has become very popular. In fact, it is one of the most sought after by families around the world, being considered a perfect breed for its appearance and character. It is also a very intelligent dog that allows it to learn quickly when it comes to teaching it different aspects through training.

It is a dog that quickly becomes attached to all the members of its family, trying to be the leader of the house and taking maximum care of both its owners and its toys and territory.

Yorkshire terrier care

The Yorkshire terrier does not require great care beyond what is usual for this type of small dog with great fur.

When it comes to grooming the dog, it is important to bathe it with some frequency and brush it several times a week so that the coat can always be found in perfect condition and free of knots, as well as being shiny and soft.

As for your diet, you should maintain a balanced diet with a variety of food that includes meat and vegetables. It must also have feed, which allows them to always be well fed. In addition, occasionally it is advisable to add meat, chicken and fish to your diet.

You must take care of the quantities since in the case of small dogs it is a big problem if you have an obese dog, since it can suffer from serious health problems.

Things to keep in mind about the Yorkshire terrier

There are a number of aspects that you should keep in mind regarding the Yorkshire terrier, which are the following:

  • They are dogs that, although they have a lot of energy, are able to adapt without problems to small spaces, something that is due to their size.
  • It must have a comfortable place to sleep and be protected from the cold, since it is a dog that suffers a lot from low temperatures.
  • It is a dog that likes to be caressed by its owners, so it is important that you create an appropriate bond with it.
  • He has a friendly character except when he gets angry at being bothered too much.
  • You must take care of its fur so that it does not suffer problems from a lack of grooming. It is important to brush him regularly and bathe him once a week or every 15 days.
  • It is a simple race to dominate without having to punish it. They are perfect to accept dog training.
  • It needs a lot of physical exercise since it has a lot of accumulated energy. You should walk it several times a day.
