Hamster Types and Their Differences

We agree that one of the cutest or most adorable pets that we can acquire are hamsters, right? Now, it may come as a bit of a surprise to you to learn that there is no specific type of hamster. In fact, there are several species of this rodent that give us a range of options when it comes to getting one. Each one offers certain differences in their care, although in general, they do not vary much (I would say that the only factor to take into account is the climate). In addition, you will receive the same dose of cuteness regardless of the species you choose.

Today in how we want to focus on offering an article that relates each of the types of domestic hamsters that exist, or at least, those that we consider the most beautiful. Not only will we explain the differences between each species, but we will also provide you with some informative data that will be interesting. So if you are as fan of these rodents as we are, do not miss the content of this post.

On the other hand, this is not the first time that we have written an article about hamsters, in our pets section you will find entries like the following one about “How to choose a hamster”.

Golden or Syrian hamster.

These are the most popular hamsters that you have probably seen in a pet store. They are also the species that can reach the greatest length, being able to be up to 15cm long. They are usually found brown or gold in color, with a whitish belly, although they can be found in a wide variety of coat colors and patterns. The Syrian hamster with white fur is often called “Teddy Bear” and this species usually lives between two and a half or three years.

They are pets that prefer to live alone, so you should not worry about having to buy a couple or several so that the little animal does not die of loneliness. They are excellent pets for children between 6 and 10 years old, it is not recommended for children under 6 because they are too young to care for them. And as we already said, it is the most common type of domestic hamster.

The Campbell.

This is a rodent that falls into the “dwarf hamster” category. They hardly reach 10cm in length and an abundant coat is usually found on them, which is capable of covering their legs. Its most common fur is gray, with a white belly, although it differs in longevity with Syrian hamsters, since its life span is between a year and a half to two.

These little ones are very adorable, but they are known as the species with the most “bad temper” of all, since they do not play much. Not to mention that due to their small size, they are harder to pick up for play. This species can also live alone without any problem, although nothing happens if they are together with another.

Siberian or Russian.

This is one of the most popular hamster species and they are a favorite of many. They are rodents very similar to the Campbell only that they have less fur and their length is usually half of a Syrian. Its origin, as its name indicates, is from Siberia and Russia, although they can also be assigned Central Asia.

This type of hamster has a dark stripe on the upper part of its body and is generally grayish in color. If the animal is in freedom, in winter this stripe is replaced by a white one. They have the same lifespan as the Campbell’s and are considered a very social breed, so they can live with other hamsters without problems.

The Roborovski Hamster.

We close this entry talking about our favorite little ones, if you are one of those who think that the smaller the more tender, this spice is the ideal one. The Roborovski is the smallest hamster that exists, being its maximum length of 9cm. They are extremely hyperactive rodents, so you will see them running around at all times.

Due to their restless nature, it is recommended to buy them toys such as a hamster ball or a running wheel. Otherwise, a small space can generate stress. We find them in all colors, and their lifespan is estimated between two and a half to three years. They are also social creatures, so they can live in pairs or families of their kind. However, they are the hamster that requires the most care.
